Sarcopterygii

Sarcopterygii

Overview

Sarcopterygii, or lobe-finned fishes, are thought to have crawled out of the ocean and evolved into terrestrial tetrapods. This ancient lineage of fish date back to the Silurian (+420 million years ago) and there are still members of this clade alive today including the coelocanths. Having changed very little in their morphology these fish are called living fossils.
